What is Shift At Midnight?

Steam describes Shift At Midnight as an online co-op detective horror game for up to 3 players. You run a rural gas station, investigate customers who may be doppelgangers, and deal with the consequences when a creature gets away. Shifts are randomly generated, so the exact sequence can change.

The shift in three parts

1. Run the store. Stock shelves, take deliveries, clean, serve customers, and work toward the nightly quota.
2. Check each customer. Compare identification with computer records and watch behaviour before deciding whether someone is human.
3. Survive an escape. The store says a missed doppelganger can return as a monster; barricades, traps, and hiding then become part of the shift.

Modes, price, and availability

The July 21 Steam announcement announced Story Mode with 13 nights and Endless Mode (Beta) with infinite nights, unlocked after completing Story Mode. It also announced a $9.99 USD price with a launch discount and regional pricing. That is an announcement, not a guarantee of the current checkout price.

The Steam store listed the game for Windows and, when last reviewed, still displayed July 22, 2026 as its planned release date. An earlier official release announcement announced Steam, Xbox, and Xbox PC Game Pass for launch.

Matchmaking is not universal cross-play

The July 10 announcement says Xbox and Xbox PC Game Pass players have cross-play with each other. It separately says Steam players can match only with other Steam players. A Steam-only public server browser was planned for launch or shortly afterward; this site does not treat that planned feature as confirmed live.
