First-Night Survival: The Beginner's Shift Guide

Learn the gas-station layout, finish your opening deliveries, scan your first items, and run a basic ID check before the doppelgangers arrive.

Before the clock starts

The graveyard shift begins at 00:00 and ends at sunrise. On your first night nothing is trying to break in yet — this is the game's built-in tutorial, so treat it like orientation. Spend the calm minutes reading the environment instead of rushing the tasks. Players who learn the floor now survive the later, louder nights.

Know the floor plan

A 1990s roadside station is small but easy to get turned around in the dark. Four zones matter:

  • The register counter — where you scan items and check IDs. Stay near it when unsure.
  • The shelf aisles — restock targets and, later, places customers (and copies) wander.
  • The back room — deliveries, the breaker box, and trap materials spawn here.
  • Doors and windows — the only ways in. Board these up before a breach.

Walk the loop once. Knowing which window is closest to the register saves seconds when something starts scratching at the glass.

Your first shift objectives

The opening shift is a checklist of mundane work. Complete it and the real horror introduces itself gently.

Restock and face the shelves

Deliveries arrive in the back room. Pull the crates, carry stock to the half-empty shelves, and face the products (line them up front). This is worth doing: a tidy aisle is faster to scan later, and a distracted player is an easy target on night four and beyond.

Scan items at the register

When a customer slides an item across the counter, open the register UI and scan it. The scanner has a short cooldown (~0.8s per item), so group multiples together. Mis-scans reduce your shift profit, and profit is what pays for everything else — including the vet bill mentioned below.

Question your first customer

Not every late visitor is human. Your very first interrogation is scripted to teach the loop: take the ID, open the database, compare, then choose Approve or Deny. Get comfortable with the UI here, because the decisions stop being obvious by night three.

The ID check, step by step

Every customer hands over an ID card. Run the same routine every time:

StepWhat you doWhat to watch for
1Read the name aloudOdd spelling, a letter that "shouldn't" be there
2Match the birthdayA date that drifts from the database entry
3Check the state watermarkFaint, missing, or wrong-state seal
4Open the databaseConfirm the record exists at all

If two or more of these look wrong, the safe call is Deny. A wrong denial costs a little reputation; a wrong approval can end the run.

Earning the right to a pet

The pet system is a reward for good bookkeeping, not a starter perk. You must first cover a vet bill from shift profit before you can adopt:

  • Cat — small, cheap, good early warning.
  • Puppy / Dog — louder alert, follows you.
  • Husky — sturdy companion for solo runs.
  • Goose — chaotic but excellent at spotting movement.

Until that bill is paid, focus on profit. Skipping pets entirely is a valid beginner strategy — they help, but they are not required to clear the 13 nights.

What comes next

Once the first shift ends, read the Doppelganger ID Handbook to sharpen your checks, then the Boarding Up and Setting Traps guide for when the windows start rattling. Survival is a skill you build one quiet night at a time.
