Boarding Up and Setting Traps

Manage your flashlight battery, restore main power from the breaker, keep voice chat quiet, and prioritize permanent upgrades.

Board up before it gets loud

When the first scratching starts at the glass, your priority is containment, not fighting. Grab planks from the back room and board up each window and the side door. A boarded window can still be broken, but it buys time and forces anything outside to take the front entrance — where you can see it.

Set traps in the aisles you can't watch: a wired step-plate near the back room, a trip line across the main door. Traps don't kill; they announce and slow. Use the noise to reposition, not to relax.

Flashlight battery discipline

Your flashlight is your eyes in the dark, and the battery is finite. Treat it like ammo:

SituationAction
Well-lit aisleLights on, flashlight off — save the charge
Dark back roomShort pulses (tap, not hold)
Something nearbySteady beam only while moving
Idle / at registerOff completely

Find the breaker box early and you can restore main power, which lights the whole station and makes the flashlight a backup instead of a lifeline. Until then, every second of beam is a second you can't get back.

Find the breaker box

The breaker is almost always in the back room, behind the delivery crates. Flip it once and the ceiling lights return — this also wakes the security camera feed on the register. The trade-off: a lit station is easier for you to read, but it can draw more attention. Most teams flip it on night two and learn to live with the exposure.

Microphone detection

If you play with voice chat, volume is a liability. Loud talking is picked up by the creatures and used to locate you through walls. Keep callouts short and clipped:

  • "Front" — something at the main door.
  • "Window" — a board is failing.
  • "Trap" — a trap just triggered.
  • "Reload" — you're busy, don't expect help.

Whisper, or use pings. A quiet team survives longer than a loud one.

Permanent upgrades first

Shift profit isn't just for pets. The upgrade bench (unlocked after night three) spends it on things that persist across runs:

  1. Reinforced entrances — windows take longer to break.
  2. Alarms — auto-alert when a board fails.
  3. Defensive fixtures — mounted tools near the register.

Buy entrances first. A stronger front door is worth more than any single trap, because it reduces every future night's pressure at once. Combat in Shift at Midnight is mostly avoidance — board, light, silence, and upgrade, in that order.
